If you thought the Panorama Route had already revealed all its secrets, think again. Nestled on the dramatic edge of a lush Afromontane Forest in Mpumalanga, the Graskop Gorge Lift Co has unveiled yet another jaw-dropping attraction that’s set to thrill adrenaline junkies and nature lovers alike: The Cliff Walk.

This is no ordinary scenic trail. The Cliff Walk is a bold, heart-racing adventure that lets visitors get up close – and far above – the gorge’s sheer cliffs. Suspended high above the forest floor, this narrow, harnessed path hugs the rock face before leading you to a dramatic suspension bridge that stretches across the yawning chasm. With every step, you’re met with panoramic views, plunging vistas and the exhilarating knowledge that you're exploring one of South Africa’s most beautiful natural landscapes from a perspective few ever get to experience.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there. After braving the bridge, visitors can soar even further out of their comfort zone with a zipline ride, combining thrilling speed with unforgettable views. Once the adrenaline has settled, the route continues along a cliff-hugging walkway that winds beneath rock overhangs and leads to the famous viewing lift, where you can descend to the forest floor below.

Here, another magical world awaits.

The Forest Below

Descending into the gorge via the 51-metre panoramic lift – South Africa’s first of its kind – is like stepping into a hidden Afromontane realm. Elevated boardwalks lead through the lush, mossy forest, and suspension bridges span the Motitsi River, offering up-close views of a cascading waterfall and the symphony of life in this ancient ecosystem.

The 600-metre circular Forest Trail is both serene and educational, featuring interpretation boards that bring the secrets of this unique biome to life. From trickling streams to towering tree ferns, the forest trail is a celebration of biodiversity – a gentle counterpoint to the high-octane thrills above.

Graskop Gorge Cafe

Sip, stroll and soak it all in

Prefer your adventure with a touch more comfort? The newly opened Cliff Café offers one of South Africa’s most unforgettable drink stops. Perched against the cliff face and surrounded by panoramic views, this café-in-the-forest is accessible via the Viewing Lift, Cliff Walk or Next-Level Walk, a no-harness pathway that meanders along the cliff’s upper walls.

Unlike the more daring Cliff Walk, the Next-Level Walk is designed for relaxed exploration. No ropes, no sweat – just a scenic stroll incorporating gently trickling water, hanging ferns and dramatic viewpoints once only seen by climbers or drones. Whether you’re enjoying a cappuccino, a cold drink, or beer, there’s no better place to soak in the majesty of the gorge.

Visitors reaching this level via the lift can choose to go right and follow the Next-Level Walk to the café, or go left for an eventual stairway descent that links up with the Forest Trail below. Feeling peckish after your walk? Take your pick between the family-friendly Swing Café and the Lift Café with its more extensive menu. Both serve up delicious fare with unforgettable views.

A Destination Reimagined

Since opening in 2017, Graskop Gorge Lift Co has grown into one of South Africa’s premier eco-adventure destinations – and a standout on the Panorama Route. From that first bold lift installation to the millionth visitor welcomed in September 2024, the site has continuously redefined what immersive, sustainable tourism can look like.

With a growing list of attractions – including the Big Swing (a stomach-dropping 70-metre freefall that reaches 140km/h in seconds), dual ziplines, and now the Cliff Walk and Next-Level Walk, it’s become a hub where thrill meets tranquillity, and natural beauty is experienced from every angle.

Plan Your Visit

Whether you’re an adrenaline chaser, a casual stroller, or just in search of the perfect spot for your next selfie, the Graskop Gorge Lift Co offers an unmatched blend of eco-tourism, adventure and relaxation. Best of all, it’s just a short detour from iconic Panorama Route stops like God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

Please note: the Cliff Walkway requires a minimum height of 1.2m.
