Industry lobbying to address the massive backlogs in issuing transport operating licences by the Department of Transport’s (DoT) embattled National Public Transport Regulator (NPTR) has made some progress.

Although we seem to have moved the slow wheel of the NPTR slightly with some operators receiving their Operating Licences, we still have a mountain to climb.

As you know, SATSA has been at the forefront of trying to broker a sustainable solution to the ongoing challenges at the NPTR which continue to cripple the tourist transport sector.

As the saga surrounding the non-issuance of tourist transport licences drags on, the Western Cape Government has written to the Department of Transport (DoT) urgently requesting a review of the section 26 agreement that regulates the licensing process in the province.

A high-level meeting, brokered by former Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom, was held last week with the Department of Transport, chaired by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, and attended by SATSA Deputy Chair Oupa Pilane, CEO David Frost, Transport Committee Chair Onne Vegter and TBCSA Chair Blacky Komani, among others.
