The President has retracted AARTO Proclamations No 15 and 16 that were published in Government Gazette No 33114 on 16 April 2010 implementing the AARTO Act in the Municipalities of Ekurhuleni, Nelson Mandela Bay, City of Cape Town and eThekwini on 1 July 2010 and in the rest of the country on 1 November 2010.

No new dates were proclaimed, however the acting CEO from the RTMC has issued a press release indicating that AARTO will be implemented successfully in this financial year, ending 31 March 2011.

This means the Criminal Procedure Act, 1977 still applies in these areas for the prosecution of road traffic offences.

Please note AARTO is still in force in the Municipalities of Tshwane and Johannesburg.
